Thyroid Function Test for Thyrotoxicosis
The provider examines the thyroid gland at selected times following oral administration of radioiodine to determine the amount that reaches the thyroid within a 4 to 24 hour period after ingestion. These measurements identify whether the gland is overactive, underactive, or functioning normally. Providers generally run this study to determine the reasons for thyrotoxicosis, which is an excess of thyroid hormone in the body, which may be caused by Graves' disease, an autoimmune hyperthyroidism, or overactive thyroid.
