A shunt forms the bypass channel or passageway in the blood circulation connecting two blood vessels and diverts blood from one region to the other. The provider performs this procedure so that blood bypasses the defective right chamber of the heart and reaches directly into one lung through the pulmonary artery for oxygenation.
