Lumbar Spinal Fusion for Lower Back Pain
A provider performs arthrodesis, also called spinal fusion, to permanently join two or more vertebrae in the lumbar spine. Spinal arthrodesis restores mobility and alleviates persistent pain resulting from a spinal condition, such as a herniated disk, spinal stenosis, or spinal injury. The provider accesses the spine from the sides of the vertebrae without entering the chest cavity. The provider excises a small amount of intervertebral disk material, the cushion of cartilage material separating two vertebrae, and inserts bone graft material to strengthen the fusion site.
