A hydrogen or methane breath test is a diagnostic procedure to find problems related to gastric functionality such as lactose deficiency, fructose intolerance, bacterial overgrowth, and oro–cecal gastrointestinal transit time. The concept behind hydrogen or methane breath testing is to measure the hydrogen or methane levels in the expelled breath. The test is noninvasive and is, therefore, readily tolerated by patients.
