Excision of Dead Tissue from Wound

After debriding the initial 20 cm2 at the same encounter, the provider excises devitalized (dead) tissue from an open wound. The provider may use a variety of techniques that include sharp debridement with scissors, forceps, or a scalpel (a surgical knife), or the provider may use a high pressure waterjet, with or without suction. The excision can include the deep layer of skin or the outer layer; blood clots or other debris that has escaped from the blood vessels and been deposited in the wound; or biofilm, microorganisms that adhere to the exposed tissues of the wound.
