Arterial Procedure with Catheter and Stent

In this procedure, the provider inserts a catheter into an artery, typically the femoral artery in the groin, using percutaneous access, meaning through the skin. The provider then advances the catheter through the blood stream to the site in the brain where the stenotic, plaque–narrowed artery is located. The provider may then inflate a small balloon within the narrowed artery to dilate it and to reduce the narrowing of the artery.
