Contraceptive capsules (e.g. Levonorgestrel) are inserted subdermally, under the patient's arm skin.  These capsules then release levels of synthetic hormones to prevent pregnancy.  These capsules eventually release all of their synthetic hormone and have to be removed and/or replaced if the patient chooses.
